Career development
Alumni UniBE
Alumni UniBE brings together interested students, alumni, and members of the University of Bern, providing them with access to professional and personal networks.
Unemployment
One year after completing their education, doctoral graduates have a very low unemployment rate. They also take on management positions more often than, for example, master's graduates (FSO 2024). Nevertheless, the transition to the (non-university) job market can be associated with a period of unemployment. Entitlement to unemployment benefits depends on residence status and proof of paid employment in the last two years prior to the onset of unemployment.
BNF – Berufliche Neuorientierung für Fach- und Führungskräfte (Professional Reorientation for Specialists and Managers) is a Switzerland-wide organization that supports highly qualified job seekers with university or technical college degrees. It offers practical project work in companies, combined with further training, individual counseling, and coaching.
Dual career
The University of Bern supports partners of newly arrived researchers in starting a new career in Switzerland. Personal counseling is offered, and depending on the target group and needs, support and targeted coaching in job hunting is also available.
Academic career planning
The advisory services offered by the Academic Careers Office are aimed at doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers from all faculties who are about to take the next step in their academic career. The advice is provided in coordination with other departments that support researchers.
The Universities of Bern Counselling Centre is happy to advise and support students and employees of the University of Bern in planning and preparing the next steps in their careers – confidentially and free of charge.
