Doctorate
A doctorate is an advanced academic degree for which the prerequisite is a recognized master’s degree with good grades, and which constitutes the transition phase from academic training to independent research. The central element of a doctorate is the acquisition of scientific expertise through writing a doctoral thesis – an independent scientific paper that generates new insights into a specialized field through innovative approaches, and demonstrates both originality and subject relevance.
Coursework
A component of a doctorate that runs in parallel with independent research activities is coursework that may be carried out individually and/or as part of a course of study. The academic title of “Doctor” is awarded on successful completion of a doctorate. A doctorate forms the basis for a continuing scientific career within academia, but also provides excellent qualifications for a career outside academia.
Personal skills
At the same time a doctorate represents a significant phase in a doctoral candidate’s personal development, during which skills such as self-organization, self-reflection, critical thinking, managing uncertainties and self-responsibility are systematically strengthened.
Qualification position
A doctorate serves to achieve an advanced academic qualification. The duration of employment as a doctoral candidate is thus limited, the maximum term being four years. Doctoral candidates must be registered at the university. While there is no limit on the length of registration, swift progress in completing a doctorate is expected.
Before embarking on a doctorate
Before embarking on a doctorate, it is important to consider some fundamental questions: What is my motivation to pursue a doctorate? Do I fulfill the necessary prerequisites? What are my career goals?
