Appointment Training with Opportunity for Individual Coaching

The training is aimed at advanced docs and postdocs who intend to apply for a professorship in the near future. The appointment training prepares participants systematically and purposefully for the application process. Depending on the interests of the participants, the focus can be placed on different academic systems: in addition to German-speaking countries, this also includes large parts of the EU as well as the UK, the US, and Canada. Participants receive information on the basics and procedures of appointment processes at universities, as well as tips for optimally preparing their application and designing their application documents. In addition, key components of the process—such as the interview with the appointment committee—can be rehearsed in training situations. Please note: The training lasts two days (March 25 and 26, 2026).

Note:
- The course will be held in English. Individual coaching is available in English or in German.
- Participants commit to attending the entire appointment training. It is not possible to attend individual workshop days or only the individual coaching.
- The number of participants is limited to 15 people. A waiting list will be maintained.
- The course is open to advanced doctoral students. Applications from postdoctoral researchers will be given priority if there is a waiting list.

Learning Outcomes
Participants will
- be familiar with the framework conditions, individual elements, and possible variations in appointment procedures in different academic systems.
- know how to thoroughly prepare for an application and optimize their application documents.
- know how to present their strengths convincingly when interacting with the committee and have developed argumentation strategies for dealing with critical questions.
- be able to prepare for employment negotiations in a targeted manner.
Schedule
A joint workshop will take place each morning from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In addition, all participants can take advantage of a 45-minute individual coaching session to explore specific questions in greater depth—either directly on one of the two afternoons on site or online at a later date. It is recommended that participants arrange a later appointment if they would like feedback on revised application documents or concepts to be submitted, or if they would like to prepare for a specific application.
Preparation
Approximately two weeks in advance, a short questionnaire will be sent to assess the participants' expectations and prior knowledge in order to tailor the event as closely as possible to the target group.
Methods
Input from the speaker, group exchange and discussion, training units, individual feedback. Participants will receive a comprehensive handout containing in-depth information, worksheets, and checklists.
Dr. Margarete Hubrath
- Since 2001, active nationally and internationally as a trainer, consultant, and coach in academia; founder and director of uni-support / Düsseldorf/Krefeld.
- Qualified coach for individuals and teams (ISP/DGfC); co-founder of “Coachingnetz-Wissenschaft” in 2005.
- Many years of experience in research and teaching at several universities and a non-university research institute.
