Mobility

An academic career involves researchers changing universities across borders.

Mobility

  • brings increased experience in methods and knowledge,
  • is important for networked research,
  • and strengthens one's own profile and scientific independence.

There are various funding programs during an academic career that explicitly support mobility.

SNSF mobility grants

Doctoral candidates employed as part of an SNSF research project can apply to the SNSF for mobility grants.

With Postdoc.Mobility, the SNSF offers mobility grants for up to two years (plus one year for return). For shorter stays, an application to the SNSF's Scientific Exchanges program may also be considered.

University-wide mobility funding programs

  • The graduate schools cover part of the costs for research stays and travel expenses.
  • UniBE Doc.Mobility: Funding for doctoral candidates who are not funded by the SNSF to undertake a 6- to 12-month research stay at a university or research institution abroad.
  • UniBE Short Travel Grants for (Post)Docs: Up to CHF 8,000 for doctoral candidates and postdocs to undertake a 2- to 8-week research stay abroad.

Up to CHF 8,000 for doctoral candidates and postdocs to undertake a 2- to 8-week research stay abroad.

Teaching Staff Exchange offers the opportunity to enrich one's own teaching experience, initiate further cooperation, and internationalize the range of courses offered at the University of Bern.

Faculty-specific mobility funding programs

Regulations, information sheets, and other information are not available online. Financial support comes from various sources: funds from the university's Young Researchers Commission, which are awarded informally; funds from SUK doctoral programs, which are awarded by the examination board; funds from the faculty's excursion fund; and funds that are available to each professorship.

There are no regulations or information sheets. Information about support is provided at the individual institutes, and a form is available for applications.

The faculty actively supports faculty members' attendance at conferences. There are faculty expense regulations for intermediate staff members and assistant professors, as well as an application form. There is a specific funding program (at the UniBE Research Foundation) for attending summer or winter schools. Anyone who is new to the faculty or has questions about how to apply can contact the dean's office.

The Faculty of Medicine finances doctoral candidates' travel expenses for participation in conferences (with active contribution) within the framework of the graduate schools. The guidelines are published on their websites.

At the Vetsuisse Faculty, travel allowances are paid by the individual institutes and departments. There is no faculty-wide fund. Individuals in a specialization program can submit an application to the Specialization Commission.

The Faculty of Humanities has a field trip fund for master's students and doctoral candidates and a business travel fund for employees. The necessary information sheets and forms for applications can be found on the faculty's website. There is a separate funding pool for travel expenses for members of the Graduate School of the Arts and Humanities.

The Faculty of Human Sciences supports active contributions to conferences (lectures, posters) by intermediate staff members. The necessary information and application forms can be found on the website. The institutes also provide financial support: at the Institute of Psychology, the details can be found in the internal university area (under “Working at the Institute”), and at the Institute of Sports Science, the principles are set out in internal information sheets.

The faculty's early-career researchers support committee provides travel expense support through three application rounds per year. Individuals are only eligible for support once every four years. The guidelines and application form can be found on the website. Additional funds are also available within institutes and research groups, which are allocated on a local basis.
